Doing the Scary Thing Anyway!

Recently, I stepped well outside of my comfort zone and wrote my very first jewellery-making tutorial for a silver clay magazine I’ve been reading and admiring for years. It felt exciting… terrifying… and full of those familiar “who do I think I am?” thoughts.
And yet — I did it anyway.

For a long time, that magazine had been something I looked up to from a distance. A place where other people’s work lived. So sending in my own tutorial and knowing it will soon appear in its pages feels incredibly surreal.
The experience reminded me of something important.
You don’t need to be perfect to begin. You don’t need to have everything figured out — you figure it out as you go.You’re allowed to start small and build things at your own pace. And you’re absolutely allowed to make mistakes — they’re often where the most learning happens.

The piece I created for the tutorial was made using silver clay and everyday objects I found at home, including buttons, lace & wallpaper! It was a reminder that creativity doesn’t need perfection, just curiosity and willingness to try.
Growth doesn’t usually arrive in great big leaps. More often, it shows up as tiny steps forward — moments where you choose to try, even when doubt is loud.
That might look like experimenting with a new creative hobby, booking onto a workshop, choosing to shop more consciously, or saying yes to something that stretches you a little.
None of those steps have to be perfect — they just have to be taken. Those small steps add up.
So if there’s something you’ve been quietly thinking about trying… this your gentle nudge 💜
Sometimes, readiness isn’t the point.
Sometimes, taking the step is.
Jayne had never worked with silver clay before attending one of my workshops, yet she created a beautiful pair of earrings that she now enjoys wearing — a perfect reminder that you don’t need prior experience to make something meaningful.

“I had such a great time at Hazel’s silver clay jewellery workshop! It was fascinating to go through the whole process from start to finish, and even more special to walk away with a pair of earrings I can actually wear.”
Watching people surprise themselves with what they can create is one of my favourite parts of what I do and it’s proof that sometimes, all it takes is giving yourself permission to try.
