From Sketch to Silver: A Bespoke silver jewellery design

One of my favourite parts of being a jeweller is helping someone transform an idea into a piece of jewellery that will be treasured for years to come.
Recently, I had the privilege of creating a very special bespoke silver necklace: a handcrafted silver cross featuring a Rose Quartz gemstone, commissioned as a 21st birthday gift for a customer's daughter.
Watching a design evolve from a simple conversation into a finished piece is one of the most rewarding parts of creating custom silver jewellery, and I thought I'd share a little of that journey with you.
Every Bespoke Jewellery Commission Begins with a Conversation
Every bespoke piece starts the same way...with a conversation.
We talked about the style they were hoping for, the meaning behind the gift, and the small details that would make the necklace truly personal. Understanding the story behind a commission is just as important to me as creating the jewellery itself.
From there, I began sketching several different ideas.
While my customer loved every design, two quickly became favourites: one inspired by delicate flowers and another featuring three-dimensional leaves.
Instead of asking them to choose between the two, I went back to my sketchbook and combined the elements they loved most into a single design.
When they saw the updated sketch, they knew immediately that it was the one.
Planning Before the Silver Clay
Before I even opened the silver clay, I created a paper version of the necklace.
This is a step I often take when creating bespoke jewellery because it allows me to check the proportions, refine the overall composition, and carefully plan how each of the three-dimensional leaves will fit together.
Taking the time to perfect the design at this stage means there are fewer surprises later and helps ensure the finished piece is exactly as envisioned.
Turning the Sketch into a Handmade Silver Necklace
Once I was happy with the design, it was finally time to bring it to life.
Every leaf, texture and engraved detail was carefully handcrafted using silver clay. This wonderful material allows me to sculpt fine silver into intricate forms before it is fired into solid silver.
There was just one part I decided not to make myself: the gemstone bezel.
After three determined attempts at creating one, I accepted that this particular component would be better sourced from someone with specialist expertise. Rather than continuing to struggle, I chose to support another talented local maker by purchasing a beautifully crafted bezel.
I think that's an important reminder that creativity isn't about doing absolutely everything yourself, sometimes it's about recognising when another craftsperson can help create the very best result.
With the bezel in place, I carefully set the Rose Quartz gemstone, bringing the entire design together.
Jewellery That Tells a Story
One of the reasons I love creating bespoke jewellery is that no two commissions are ever the same.
Every piece tells a different story.
Some celebrate birthdays or anniversaries. Others mark new beginnings, remember loved ones, or become treasured heirlooms passed from one generation to the next.
This necklace was created to celebrate a milestone 21st birthday, making it far more than simply a beautiful accessory. It became a meaningful keepsake filled with love, thought and memories.
Knowing that something I've made will become part of someone's story is a privilege I'll never take for granted.
Kind Words from My Customer
One of the most rewarding moments comes when I hear how the finished piece has been received.
"It's soooo beautiful. She absolutely loved it. Thank you so much for making such a special 21st birthday gift."
