Ethical Jewellery, Sustainable Gemstones & Thoughtful Design
When people think about gemstones, they often imagine freshly mined stones emerging from deep within the earth. But there is another way to work with gemstones that feels much more aligned with my values as a jewellery maker: using secondhand gemstones.
These pre-loved gemstones have already been part of the world. They may have once been set in a piece of jewellery and are now given a new life in a completely different piece!
Choosing secondhand gemstones for jewellery making is one of the ways I try to create pieces that are more sustainable, and more connected to the stories materials can carry.
What Are Secondhand Gemstones?
Secondhand gemstones (also called reclaimed gemstones or pre-loved gemstones) are stones that have already been used in jewellery before.
Rather than being newly mined, they are removed from existing pieces and reset into new designs.
These gemstones might come from:
Vintage jewellery
Antique rings or brooches
Broken jewellery that can no longer be worn
Pieces that no longer suit the owner but still contain beautiful stones
By reclaiming these gemstones and incorporating them into new jewellery designs, we can extend the life of materials that already exist rather than relying on newly mined stones.
Why I Choose Reclaimed Gemstones
The jewellery industry is complex, and sourcing gemstones responsibly can be incredibly challenging.
Mining gemstones can sometimes have serious environmental and social impacts, including:
Habitat destruction
Water and soil pollution
Displacement of large areas of earth
Poor working conditions in some mining communities
There are ethical mining initiatives working to improve these conditions, but transparency within gemstone supply chains is often difficult to track.
Gemstones rarely move directly from mine to jeweller. Instead, they often travel through multiple countries and processes, such as:
Mining
Sorting and trading
Cutting and polishing
Wholesale distribution
Retail sales
Because of this long journey, it can be difficult to guarantee the full origin story of a gemstone.
Using secondhand gemstones is one way to reduce reliance on newly mined materials while still working with beautiful gemstones.
Secondhand Does Not Mean Lower Quality
A common misconception is that secondhand gemstones are somehow lower quality than newly mined ones.
In reality, this isn’t true!
Gemstones are incredibly durable. Many stones have existed for millions of years before they are even discovered. Once cut and polished, they can last for generations when they are properly cared for.
How Gemstones Inspire My Jewellery Designs
When I work with reclaimed gemstones, the stone itself often becomes the starting point for the design.
Each gemstone has its own colour, shape and personality. Rather than forcing it into a pre-planned design, I like to spend time observing the stone first.
The colour, pattern and shape of the gemstone can inspire the entire piece.
For example, in some of my Secret Garden jewellery designs, the shape of a reclaimed rose quartz gemstone became the beginning of the design process.
The soft blush tone of the stone reminded me of spring blossom. From there, I began creating tiny silver blossom flowers that could sit naturally around the gemstone.
I experimented with different arrangements until the piece felt balanced and complete.
Working this way allows the gemstone to guide the design, creating jewellery that celebrates
Jewellery With Meaning
Jewellery has always been about more than decoration.
It holds memories, symbolism and emotion. It becomes part of people’s everyday lives.
When a gemstone has already existed in the world before being reset, that sense of story becomes even stronger.
A reclaimed gemstone carries both its past and its future.
And when it is placed into a new piece of jewellery, it continues its journey with someone new.
